Whilst Bulawayo Athletics Club (more affectionately called BAC) is the oldest sports club in the country (founded in 1894), and the first hockey match ever played in Zimbabwe was in Bulawayo in 1900, the game of hockey was only established at the club in 1946 (with ladies hockey starting seven years later in 1953). However BAC has grown to become the “Home of Hockey” in Zimbabwe today.
Presently the BAC teams are sponsored as follows –
BAC Men under negotiation
BAC Women Copyserve
The Club boasts three grass pitches, which were used until 1994. Whilst these are still used by schools, and for social hockey tournaments, the game in Zimbabwe changed dramatically in 1994 with the arrival of the artificial pitches. Thereafter the game moved to the Khumalo Hockey Stadium (KHS), with its two artificial, water-based pitches, but the Hockey Section has maintained strong links with its mother club, and players meet regularly at the main club for all social and celebratory events! BAC hosted the 1996 (celebrating the Hockey Sections 50th anniversary) and 1999 Africa Cup for Club Champions Tournament at the KHS. The 1996 event was the first women’s Africa club tournament and the women’s team won the bronze medal. The men won Silver in the 1999 ACCC Tournament.
In the 1980’s the BAC women’s team consistently won the National Hockey League, with players that included Olympic Gold Medallists Pat McKillop and Helen Volk. The team continues to perform well today in the National League, winning the event in 1998.
The BAC Men’s Hockey Team is recognised as the most successful team in the history of the game in Zimbabwe. Winning the National Hockey League for eleven consecutive years (1994 – 2004), and winning the HAZ Cup more frequently than any other team, it has won more titles than any other hockey team in Zimbabwe. It also won the Silver Medal in the Africa Cup for Club Champions Tournament in 1999, and has participated in this tournament more often than any other Zimbabwean team. During the mid 1980’s, and again today, it provides more than half of the National men’s Team.
In 1993 the club played host to then FIH President E. Glittich, and again was privileged to meet with the FIH President Mrs E van Breda Vriesman during her 2001 visit to Bulawayo.
The section has also contributed significantly to the development of the game. Apart from providing coaches to many schools, BAC introduced “Mini-Hockey” to Zimbabwe in 1995, and launched the now popular and successful provincial Holiday camps in 1994. The club has employed foreign-based coaches and players since 1994 in the belief that these players would bring to the game the skills required for the artificial surface. From the results, it would appear that this has been a success.
Today the Club has one ladies team, which plays in both the National and Local Hockey Leagues, and three men’s teams, the first team playing in both the National and Local First league, and the second and third teams playing only in the local leagues.
BAC is the only Hockey Club in Zimbabwe that actively recruits players and coaches from abroad. If you are interested in a season of “safari hockey in the sun”, then contact the club, details below.
The Hockey Section maintains an up-to-date history of the section, its achievements and players, which is available on request.

Queens Sports Club was founded in 1894, and as such is one the oldest sports clubs in Zimbabwe. The Hockey Section was established in 1906, and is the oldest surviving Hockey Club in the Country. It has a long, proud and distinguished history, contributing significantly to Zimbabwean Hockey at all levels.
In effect the first Inter-provincial was played in July 1906 between Bulawayo and Gwelo at the Queens Ground, Bulawayo, though the teams were in essence those of the two respective clubs. Women’s hockey in Zimbabwe was first played in Bulawayo in 1906, and the ladies section of the club was established in 1907. By 1914 the men’s league, with Queens as one of the participants was established.
Queens (as it is more popularly known, or QSC as per the fixture sheets!) presently has three men’s teams and one ladies team. The men’s first team plays in the National League, and along with the two remaining teams, also plays in the Matabeleland League. The Ladies team plays in both the National and Local league. The Club has been a regular winner of both the National Hockey League and the HAZ Cup in the past, and presently finishes in the top half of the National league.
The Club was the first club in Zimbabwe to recruit a foreign-based player / coach, in 1992, and has continued to attract such players. The well-maintained clubhouse remains one of the best sporting facilities in the country. With a stable and financially sound administration, the club welcomes foreign-based players. All club practices and matches are held on the water-based astro-turf fields of the Khumalo Hockey Stadium.
In recent years Queens has become well known for its successful and popular “Queens Easter Classic Tournament”, easily one of the largest and most successful club tournaments in the Southern Hemisphere. Foreign teams constitute a large percentage of the participating sides, but new visiting teams are always welcome. (The tournament was suspended in 2001 due to the security and fuel problems in the country, but is scheduled for 2002)
