Ginny Ross - Honorary Life Member

The Hockey Association of Zimbabwe held its Annual General Meeting on the 19th September where Mrs Virginia Ross was made a Honorary Life Member of the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe

Mrs Ross has served the national administration of hockey for twenty years, from 1995 to 2014. This has included periods of success and growth, and periods of considerable difficulty and hardship, where her grit and determination ensured the ongoing activities of the HAZ.

Ginny started her administrative career in hockey at the club level in 1983 when she was elected Chairman of the Eagles Hockey Club, before taking a break from 1985 to 1990 to raise a family.

In 1990 Ginny was graded by the FIH as an International Umpire. Following her husband to Gaborone Botswana she served as Secretary to the Botswana Hockey Association from 1991 to 1994.

Returning to Zimbabwe in 1995, she was elected as secretary of the Hockey Umpires Sub-Committee (HOSC), a position she held until 1997, when she was elected as Secretary of the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) for five years. In 2003 Ginny changed her portfolio on the HAZ, becoming an Executive Member, overseeing development and coaches.

In 2006 she was responsible for women’s hockey, and between 2005 and 2009 she continued to hold various positions on the HAZ. In 2010 Ginny was elected as Vice-President of the HAZ, a position she would hold until 2012, when she took up the position of Hon. Treasurer, a position she is has only just relinquished.

In 2011 Ginny was elected as a Member of the African Hockey Federation. Ginny was recognised by the National Sports Association with the award of National Sports Administrator in 2000, and in 2012 as National Women in Sport award.

During this period, Ginny was appointed as a neutral umpire to a number of FIH tournaments, and in due course was graded as an FIH Judge, so receiving appointments to various FIH Tournaments, the last being the World Series just played in Nairobi, Kenya.

In her various roles she has encouraged many national and U/21 teams to participate in regional and international tournaments, including the Junior World Cup in Chile in 2005, U/17 Olympic Teams playing in East London, South Africa and Lusaka, Zambia. She has served as manager to the National Women’s Indoor team playing in the Africa Cup of Nations (indoor)

Through her coaching, of both umpires and coaches, Ginny has shared her knowledge of the game with many hundreds of hockey friends across the country. For over ten years Ginny has devoted her time to coaching and development, promoting both coaches and umpires – a legacy that will live on.

Whilst Ginny is stepping down from the HAZ, we know she will always be a part of the hockey family in Zimbabwe.
